The Eating Disorder Center offers therapy for eating disorders and body image issues in Rockville, Maryland serving surrounding areas including Bethesda, Potomac, Gaithersburg, and Olney, as well as virtually throughout Maryland. We also provide eating disorder therapy in Arlington, Virginia, and throughout the state, in addition to offering services in Washington, D.C. In EMDR therapy, one of the resources that clients can create is called a container. Resources can be things or people that allow us to feel calm, safe, peaceful, etc. This container can be a real container that you have at home or an imaginary container that you create in your mind’s eye. The purpose of the container is to hold material for when we do not have the time, energy, or mental space to process through it. For example, let’s say you have back to back work meetings and in your 10 minute break between meetings you glance at your phone to see an email invitation from your boss to meet next week. Let’s imagine that you are feeling anxious about it. The container creates space to hold that anxiety about it, since you have a meeting soon and you likely don’t have time to immediately process through the anxiety. After your work meetings, let's say you have a therapy session and you bring up this anxiety with your therapist and process through the thoughts, beliefs, and body sensations that are associated with this anxiety you were experiencing. This is the act of taking the distressing material out of the container (the anxiety) and processing it when you have the time and mental space to do so. One important part about the container is that we are holding and honoring this distressing material, not throwing it away. This emphasizes the difference between containment and compartmentalization. Containment is an active process of putting something aside and coming back to it later, while compartmentalization is generally an unconscious process of discarding distressing material that we don’t want to or have the mental energy or capacity to process through or deal with. Like any skill, this gets easier and more adaptive the more that we practice it! It may be difficult to contain on the first few tries. A skilled trauma and eating disorder therapist will be able to help you create, practice, and successfully use the container as a way to support your recovery. Another adaptive aspect about this resource is that you don’t have to be engaging in EMDR therapy in order to create and use this tool! Similar to the example above, the container skill can be used to hold any distressing material, which can include thoughts, feelings, urges, memories, or body sensations. For someone who is struggling with an eating disorder, you can contain the urge to restrict, thoughts related to your body image, or the feeling of “fullness” that can be a difficult body sensation for those in recovery.
