By: Jennifer Rollin, LCSW-C Therapist and Founder of The Eating Disorder Center Confidential, Virtual Care for Those in the Public Eye & Helping Professionals As an eating disorder therapist, I’ve worked with people from all walks of life. And while eating disorders do not discriminate, there are unique barriers that public figures and helping professionals often face when it comes to seeking treatment. At The Eating Disorder Center, we provide specialized eating disorder therapy for public figures, executives, and professionals, as well as their loved ones. We understand that privacy and discretion are essential. Public figures may include executives, physicians, therapists, nurses, attorneys, athletes, influencers, entrepreneurs, media personalities, or anyone whose visibility or professional standing feels closely tied to their identity and livelihood. Their partners, spouses, parents, and family members often carry a parallel weight of concern, responsibility, and silence. One important truth is often overlooked: even people at the top of their fields can deeply struggle with an eating disorder. Professional success, intelligence, compassion, and leadership do not protect someone from mental illness. Yet many people believe they should be immune, which can make asking for help feel shameful or frightening. Getting help when you are struggling is so important! Even if you feel like on the outside you appear to be at the top of your game. Common Barriers to Eating Disorder Treatment for Public Figures and Professionals Fear of exposure or loss of privacy A common concern we hear is, “What if someone finds out?” Public figures often worry about being recognized in waiting rooms, running into colleagues, or having personal health information become gossip. Even insurance records can feel unsafe. Reputational concerns Many professionals fear that seeking eating disorder therapy could undermine credibility, authority, or public trust. There is often worry that struggling will be seen as weakness or instability, rather than what it truly is: a serious, treatable mental health condition. Shame among helping professionals For therapists, physicians, nurses, dietitians, shame can feel especially intense. Thoughts like, “I should know better,” “I help others with this,” or “What would people think if they knew?” are extremely common. Public figures may also feel pressure to embody health, balance, or self-control, while quietly struggling behind the scenes. This internal conflict often keeps people stuck longer than necessary. Perfectionism and high achievement Public-facing and high-responsibility roles often reward discipline and performance, traits that can mask or reinforce eating disorder behaviors. Many people tell themselves, “I’m functioning. I’m successful. It’s not that bad.” But success does not equal health. High achievement and deep suffering can coexist. Difficulty finding discreet, specialized care Not all therapy practices understand the pressures of public life. For some, the logistics of in-person therapy, travel, scheduling, or visibility, become another barrier to getting help. Loved ones feel unsure how to help Partners and family members often recognize warning signs early but feel unsure how to intervene. They may fear saying the wrong thing, damaging the relationship, or triggering defensiveness, especially when power dynamics, shared careers, or public image are involved. How We Provide Confidential Eating Disorder Therapy At The Eating Disorder Center, we have experience working with public figures and helping professionals, including therapists, physicians, and nurses. We approach this work thoughtfully and intentionally, knowing that discretion, trust, and clinical expertise are essential. Confidential, private-pay care We are a private-pay practice, which allows for greater autonomy, flexibility, and privacy. We are mindful of confidentiality at every level, from scheduling and communication to documentation and treatment planning. Specialized eating disorder expertise Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions, not lifestyle choices or phases. Our team specializes in evidence-based eating disorder treatment and understands how these illnesses intersect with identity, control, trauma, perfectionism, and public scrutiny. Virtual eating disorder therapy for privacy and flexibility We provide secure virtual eating disorder therapy, allowing clients to receive care from the privacy of their home or office. Virtual care is especially helpful for professionals with demanding schedules, frequent travel, or heightened concerns about anonymity, while still offering meaningful, effective treatment. Individualized, nonjudgmental treatment Care is tailored to each person’s needs, readiness, and circumstances. You do not need to perform, explain, or justify your pain. You are allowed to be human here. Support for loved ones We also work with partners and family members, helping them understand eating disorders, communicate effectively, and support recovery without carrying the burden alone. You Are Allowed to Get Help—Quietly and Safely Seeking eating disorder therapy does not mean you are failing. It means you are human. For many public figures and professionals, getting support is one of the most protective decisions they can make, for themselves and for the people who depend on them.
