By: Olivia Kline, EDC Administrative Assistant Reviewed by Jennifer Rollin, LCSW-C Getting kids ready for school after summer break is hard. Adjusting to a new routine, balancing extracurriculars, and worrying about homework can be overwhelming. On top of that, scheduling doctors appointments, check-ups, dentist appointments, etc. is a lot while trying to juggle kids' new daily routine. Here at The Eating Disorder Center, we strive to have flexibility in our appointments as we understand how busy it is this time of year for families with children in school. My mom is an elementary school principal and I’ve been visiting with her over the summer. I can feel the chaos even at home with her; there is so much to prepare for when starting the new school year. School is demanding for kids, which in turn, puts more demands on parents. There is mayhem all around from the administrative side of school, to the classroom, to getting kids ready for the new school year. It is exhausting. At The Eating Disorder Center we offer eating disorder therapy for teens in Rockville, Maryland and virtually throughout Maryland, Virginia, and DC. We specialize in helping teens to recover from eating disorders, including ARFID, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, OSFED, disordered eating and body image issues. Some Tips For Fitting in Eating Disorder Therapy 1. Plan ahead when it comes to scheduling. There are ways to help combat being overwhelmed with all the changes coming as school approaches. For example, planning ahead can help! Try scheduling your child’s necessary appointments ahead of time before school starts, so when school starts, you have less responsibilities to worry about. Additionally, try to start establishing a routine that is similar to the routine during the school year. For example, you could make waketimes and bedtimes mimic the school year’s schedule. 2. Find a therapist who has after school appointments available. At The Eating Disorder Center, we understand how it can be a lot to juggle all of these things and eating disorder therapy. We currently have openings during after-school hours. This way, you can plan ahead and schedule eating disorder therapy before school starts and by starting now, you can also start getting into the routine of your child attending therapy. By starting now, it can help ease into the transition when the school year begins. Below are our clinicians who have current availability outside school hours! Feel free to click on their profiles to see if you think your child or teen may be a good fit for working with one of our clinicians Find a therapist with an after school opening!
