By: Danielle Goury Reviewed by Jennifer Rollin, MSW, LCSW-C On behalf of the team at The Eating Disorder Center, we are so excited to introduce Olivia Kline, LGPC. Olivia enjoys working with clients of all ages, but is especially passionate about working with children (ages 3+) and teens with eating disorders. She works with clients struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, body image concerns, anxiety, trauma, and family-related challenges. Olivia provides therapy in person in Rockville, Maryland and virtually throughout Maryland. She also offers after-school and after-work appointments! One of the many things that stands out about Olivia is her warmth, compassion, and dedication to helping clients feel genuinely supported throughout their recovery journey. She is especially passionate about working with children and teens and brings specialized training in child-centered play therapy to her work. I recently sat down with Olivia to learn more about her path to becoming a therapist, her approach to treatment, and what she enjoys most about helping clients navigate recovery and healing. Danielle: What inspired you to become a therapist, and what led you to specialize in working with eating disorders? Olivia: I grew up in a rural community where access to mental health care was limited, and from an early age I recognized that emotional well-being often wasn’t prioritized. That experience opened my eyes to the gaps in mental health care—not only in my community but across the country. I have always been passionate about helping others, and becoming a therapist allows me to do meaningful work while also contributing to greater access to care. It is incredibly rewarding to support people through their challenges and be part of creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to receive the care they deserve. Danielle: What do you enjoy most about working with children and teens? Olivia: I love working with children and teens because of how creative, innovative, and genuine they are. Young people often bring fresh perspectives and a level of honesty that makes therapy both meaningful and rewarding. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to support and empower the next generation as they navigate challenges, build resilience, and grow into their authentic selves. Danielle: For people who may not be familiar with it, how would you describe play therapy and why is it such a valuable tool when working with children? Olivia: Play therapy is a form of expressive therapy similar to art or music therapy. Children often express themselves and communicate through play, especially because they developmentally don't have the language to communicate what is coming up for them. Play therapy provides a safe and supportive space for children to process emotions, express themselves, and make sense of their world. It also offers opportunities to model and teach coping skills, emotional regulation, and other therapeutic tools in ways that are developmentally appropriate and engaging. Danielle: Is there a common myth or misconception about eating disorders that you wish more people understood? Olivia: One of the biggest myths I want to challenge is that eating disorders only affect certain types of people, or that someone has to “look sick” to be struggling. Eating disorders can impact people of all ages, genders, body sizes, and backgrounds. In younger children, eating disorders may show up through anxiety around food, selective eating, changes in growth patterns, withdrawal from activities, or increased rigidity and distress around meals. In teens and adults, they can also be accompanied by preoccupation with food, body image concerns, compulsive exercise, binge eating, purging behaviors, or significant emotional distress around eating and weight. Because eating disorders affect both physical and emotional well-being, they can have a profound impact at any age. Early recognition and intervention are incredibly important, and everyone deserves compassionate, evidence-based care regardless of what they look like or whether their struggles fit common stereotypes. Danielle: How would you describe your therapeutic style or approach to working with clients? Olivia: I approach therapy with warmth, safety, and collaboration at the core of my work. I am rooted in person-centered frameworks and draw from other modalities such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic practices. When utilizing play therapy, I often draw from child centered play therapy and incorporate directives derived from DBT, ACT, or emotion regulation. I also utilize FBT informed therapy when appropriate. Danielle: What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Olivia: Outside of work I enjoy thrifting, reading, and Pilates. I also love to try new restaurants and cuisines. We are thrilled to welcome Olivia into her new role as a therapist at The Eating Disorder Center. Her person-centered approach, dedication to supporting children, teens, adults, and families, and passion for helping clients build a more peaceful relationship with food and their bodies make her a wonderful addition to our clinical team.
