By: Megan Samuels, MSW, LCSW-C, Trauma and Eating Disorder Therapist The Eating Disorder Center provides therapy for eating disorders and body image in Rockville, Maryland serving Bethesda, Potomac, Gaithersburg, and Olney, and virtually throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our team also utilizes creative approaches, such as providing handouts, to enhance and support the recovery process. This handout is just one example of a tool that our clinicians may use in sessions or assign as part of a client’s work between appointments. In EMDR therapy, one of the resources that clients can create is called a safe space. Resources are things or people that allow us to feel calm, safe, peaceful, etc. A safe space can be any place, real or imaginary, where you can go to in your mind, to access nervous system regulation when you may be feeling anxious, dysregulated, etc. One nice thing about this resource is that it is portable and can be used wherever. For example, you may be anxious about going on an airplane flight or before a big work presentation. In both of these situations, you can access the safe space resource in your mind to help shift your nervous system into more of a state of regulation. Another thing I like about this resource is that you don’t have to be engaging in EMDR therapy in order to create and use this tool! But, if you are in EMDR therapy, you can have the opportunity to install the safe space using dual attention stimulus, which can strengthen the adaptive neural pathways in your brain which can make it easier to get to this safe space when you are feeling dysregulated. This handout walks you through some of the questions that can be helpful to consider when thinking about creating safe space. This exercise can also be used as a grounding exercise so the questions will ask you things that engage the five senses (touch, taste, hearing, sight, and smell). On the second page of the handout, there is space to draw out your safe space. You are welcome to use different materials or art supplies that can help this process (such as colors, textures, magazine cut outs, stickers, etc.).
