You might wonder "why should I see an eating disorder therapist vs. a general therapist?"
1. Specialized training to treat eating disorders. Most therapists often get little to no training on eating disorders. Eating disorder therapists, however, have completed additional, specialized training on how to treat eating disorders and continue to build on this knowledge throughout their careers.
2. More eating disorder treatment experience. Therapists who don't specialize in eating disorders not only have limited training in eating disorders but also tend to have limited experience helping clients recover from eating disorders. Whereas eating disorder specialists treat eating disorders all day and in many different individuals and families.
3. Impact to mental health. Eating disorders are miserable, consume a lot of energy, and take over people's lives. They are often intertwined with other mental health issues, as well, so it helps to have an expert who understands this dynamic.
4. Eating disorders are complex and can be deadly. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Eating disorders can also affect the body's physical functioning in ways that require professional monitoring.
Just as you wouldn't have your primary care physician perform brain surgery, it's so important to see an eating disorder specialist if you think you or a loved one might be struggling with an eating disorder.
